In an exhibition of his work opening at PYRO Gallery, ceramic sculptor John McCarthy explores botanical life in clay, taking a closer look at intricate forms, shapes, and textures. In a previous show McCarthy focused on nature on a larger scale, examining the undulating contours of a hillside, a rocky textured creek bed, and a stand of graceful ferns.
In his current work McCarthy examines nature from a different perspective, saying, “As I began my preparation for this exhibition, I knew I wanted to focus on the smallest details in botanical flora, absorbing shapes and forms and changing them into my own abstract expressions." Working with the intricate variability of ceramic textures and glazes, McCarthy brings this work to life.
Complimenting that work, McCarthy has invited guest artist James Norton to join him. Norton uses photography to transform botanical forms into otherworldly visions of color and shape. Reflecting McCarthy’s subtleties of form with bold tones and structure, the two artists’ works form a more complete vision from different viewpoints.
Come join us as we explore these two unique perspectives in the new show at PYRO Gallery, titled “Botanical Forms.”
