Experimenting With Light

As a photographer I am drawn to light rather than to the object it illuminates. My work begins with a photo that captures reflected, translucent, or diffuse light. I transform that image to produce an unfamiliar view of the familiar. For this show, for example, I created compositions from photos of a beam of light on a lawn at night, early morning sunlight on the wall in a church, and reflected light on a polished aluminum elevator door. I use photographic software to reconstruct my photos, experimenting with shape, color, and the qualities of light. My goal is to create unexpected compositions that evoke mystery and engage the viewer’s imagination.
Beside each framed composition in the exhibit is a card showing the photo that served as raw material for that composition. I encourage viewers to search for elements of the photo that appear in the final composition.
