History

PYRO was formed as a cooperative art gallery in 2003 at 221 Hancock Street by CJ Pressma, Susan Moffett, Marilyn Whitesell, Scott Borden, Erin Devine and Mitch Eckert. The founding members were inspired to name the gallery PYRO in honor of the former firehouse they rented in what is now called the NuLu Neighborhood. The purpose of PYRO is to promote, sponsor and organize exhibits of art, and to contribute to the professional development of artists in making, exhibiting and selling works of art in a positive environment.

Despite the gallery’s several moves (to 224 West Main Street in September, 2008, and to its current NULU location in 2012), the co-op has retained the name of PYRO. PYRO has had numerous off-site group exhibitions at such venues as Actor's Theatre, Yew Dell Gardens, the Weber Gallery, The Jasper Art Center, and the Jewish Community Center.

Companion Exhibition

To share the celebration with a broader community a companion exhibition celebrating the PYRO Gallery anniversary will be mounted at the Patio Gallery at the Jewish Community Center, 3600 Dutchmans Lane, Louisville, KY 40205. The exhibition which opens January 12, 2:00 - 4:00 P.M. will feature the work of the current PYRO membership.
