Art Statement concerning exhibition: SANCTUARY

The heavy furniture and solid bones of the interior paintings, and the large trees in one of the landscapes represent a sense of permanence and safety, however fleeting those conditions really are. The plants and flowers speak to both the beauty and fragility of life. I hope that viewers see both the delicacy of living and the strength within each of us.

The paintings are made with acrylic paint, while the drawings consist of charcoal, pencil, pen and pastel.

I’ve stood in front of all these places. The drawings were all done in place, as were most of the paintings.  Drawing has an immediacy and intimacy that I treasure, while painting brings the scene to life with color and texture.

Biography

“I hold a BFA degree in drawing from Kansas State University and a BA from Pennsylvania State University, emphasis on drawing and photography. I have been fortunate to live in visually stimulating and inspiring places: rural Kansas, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and Duluth, MN, on the shore of Lake Superior. Before I moved to Louisville, I exhibited at galleries along the North Shore of Lake Superior and otherwise in Minnesota. I participated in group shows as well as individual shows.

I bring that broad experience with me to my new home in historic Louisville, and I am enjoying integrating the visual images around me into my drawings and paintings.” — Terry Spangler Dunham
